We assume that this club is named after Jose Eduvigis Diaz, a Paraguayan General who fought in the War of the Triple Alliance against the allied countries of Brazil, Argentina, and Uruguay. He was born in 1833 and after joining the armed forces, rapidly ascended through the ranks. He is most famous for commanding the Paraguayan forces in the Battle of Curupayty in 1866, where the enemy forces suffered a humiliating defeat. A few months later, he was seriously wounded while fishing in a canoe and had to have his leg amputated. He passed away shortly thereafter in 1867. He is featured on the 100 Guarani coin and is considered a military hero in Paraguay.
