You’ve all heard of Colo-Colo, one of the most popular teams in Chile, winner of 30 league titles, one Copa Libertadores, and never relegated. But did you know that they are named after a person? Who was Colo-Colo? Actually there are few historical details about him, but he is frequently mentioned in Chilean literature. We do know that he was a Mapuche Cacique, or chief. The Mapuche are a group of indigenous inhabitants of Chile and Argentina. He was a Leader in the Arauco War in which the indigenous populations of Chile fought against the Spanish conquest. He is rumored to have been a great speaker and leader. He most likely died sometime around 1555.
