Club de Regatas Vasco da Gama is the oldest team named after a person we’ve seen so far. This is a huge club from Rio de Janeiro with a long history and plenty of titles. They were founded by the Portuguese immigrant community in Rio as a rowing club. Football came soon after, and they were one of the first clubs to take a stand against racism by refusing to comply with a ban on players who weren’t white. They can claim 1 Libertadores, 4 Brazilian Serie A titles, and 23 Carioca (Rio de janiero) State championships. Some of their most famous players include, Roberto Dinamite, Romario, Bellini, Bebeto, Bismarck, Vava,  Edmundo, and Juninho Pernambucano, quite an impressive list!

The team is named after Dom Vasco da Gama, 1st Count of Vidiguera. As you might remember from geography class, Vasco da Gama was the first European explorer to reach  India by sea. He was born in Portugal in 1460 to a noble military family, and later in life he was given the mission of finding an open sea route from Portugal to the East. On July 8, 1497, he set off from Lisbon with four ships and 170 men. He sailed down the east coast of Africa, around the Cape of Good Hope, and up the west coast of Africa, completing his journey in Calicut. It was the longest voyage ever made at the time, lasting two years with 300 days at sea and covering 24,000 miles. By the time he returned to Lisbon, only two ships and 55 men remained. This trip is historically important because it marked the beginning of the Portuguese colonial empire. Vasco da Gama later made other voyages. It was on one of these voyages that he contracted malaria, passing away in 1524.

Here is Vasco’s traditional hymn, done in a different style:

Jorge Wilstermann, nicknamed “Aviador”, is one of the bigger clubs in Bolivia, with a successful record of 12 first division titles and 3 Copa Bolivia titles. They are the first Bolivian club to reach the semi-finals of Copa Libertadores. The club was founded by workers from Lloyd Aereo Boliviano (LAB), Bolivia’s now defunct national airline. It is named after Jorge Wilstermann Camacho, Bolivia’s first commercial pilot. Jorge Wilstermann was born in 1910. His father, of German descent, was a mechanic for LAB. Jorge became a pilot at a young age and he was the first civilian aviator in Bolivia although he later acted as a military pilot in the Chaco War. In 1936, he was flying a commercial route from Cochabamba to Oruro when his plane, a Junker, went down killing all aboard. He was only 25 years old at the time. He is buried in the Cementerio Aleman in Cochabamba.

Club 12 de Octubre

Country: Paraguay    City: Itauguá

Founded: August 14, 1914       Colors: Blue, White

Stadium: Estadio Juan Canuto Pettengill   Web: Club 12 de Octubre

Club 12 de Octubre currently plays in the Paraguayan Division Intermedia. Although the team has been around for a little over one hundred years, most of their time was spent outside of the Primera Division. In 1997, Club 12 de Octubre was promoted to the Primera Division and they won the Clausura title in 2002. They lost the final to the Apertura champion, Libertad. Club 12 de Octubre have been in two Copa Libertadores, but they ever made it out of the first round.

The most famous player for Club 12 de Octubre is Salvador Cabañas. He started his career at Club 12 de Octubre in 1998. He moved on to various teams and reached the height of his career at Club América. In January 2010, Cabañas was shot in the head in Mexico City by a member of the Beltran-Leyva Cartel. After two years of recovery, Cabañas signed with Club 12 de Octubre. He played his first game since the shooting on April 14, 2012 against Martin Ledesma.

October 12 is significant because it’s the day Paraguay declared it’s independence from Argentina, Spain, and Portugal. On October 12, 1811, the Friendship, Assistance and Trade agreement was signed with the envoy from Buenos Aires, General Belgrano. There are other sites that give a different date for Paraguayan independence, but this site endorses the October 12, 1811 date.

October 12, 1492 is the date that Christopher Columbus reached the new world, but I’m pretty sure that’s not the reason for naming this team.

This team, known as Los Rojos, has spent time in various divisions in Paraguay, including 8 seasons in the First Division. They are named in honor of the day that their city, Ciudad del Este, was founded in 1957. The name also honors San Blas, or Saint Blaise, the patron saint of Ciudad del Este.

Ciudad del Este is the 2nd largest city in Paraguay. Located on the tri-border area with Brazil and Argentina, it’s a tax-free commercial center which is know as the contraband capital of South America.
